After a few fun, maybe slightly sleep deprived years exploring DC with my son, Auggie, it was time to figure out what I wanted to do next. I learned so much in those early years, including the hidden gems in our DC museums, the best playgrounds, where to get wet in the summer, and the places where a city kid can be immersed in nature. I also learned that I love making fun and functional things for kids. Hats with cozy ear flaps, versatile costume pieces for pretend play, and soft soled shoes all got their start as we played and explored. Once my son started school I was able to grow my creative ideas into a small business which reflects the things that I believe in. My designs show my belief that dinosaurs and unicorns are for everyone, representation matters, and glitter should be biodegradable. I am proud to be a DC maker. (I love this photo of Auggie wearing one of my crowns at the Lincoln Memorial in August 2016). #dcmaker #madeindc #lincolnmemorial #hometowntourism #representationmatters #ecoglitter #biodegradableglitter #genderneutralkids #unisexkids #handmade #marchmeetthemaker #mystory

As part of their celebration of Black History month Auggie's class learned about several Black artists and made art in their style. This is Auggie's art inspired by Kehinde Wiley @kehindewiley. They also learned about artists Alma Woodsey Thomas and Kara Rice @artofksrice. Kara Rice is a DC artist and we got to meet her at Auggie's class performance yesterday. Check out her intricate and mesmerizing paintings on her page…my photo does not do them justice.
